Terms of Service
Last updated
These are the ground rules for BucketList. We've tried to keep them readable. By creating an account or using the site you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy.
1. Who can use BucketList
You must be at least 16 years old, and able to agree to these Terms. One account per person, please. If we learn an account belongs to someone younger than 16, we'll delete it. BucketList is a small, independent project (“we”).
2. What BucketList is, and isn’t
BucketList helps you track, rate and share places. Place information comes from third parties such as Wikidata and Wikipedia and can be out of date or wrong. Places can close, change or be unsafe to visit. BucketList isn't travel, safety, legal or visa advice, so please check before you go. Photo scan is an AI guess and can be wrong. We aren't affiliated with Wikimedia, OpenStreetMap or any of the places listed.
3. Your account
Give accurate sign-up details, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else is using your account. You're responsible for what happens under it. You can delete your account whenever you like from Profile → Account.
4. Your content
“Your content” means what you add: photos, captions, comments, ratings, notes, profile details, and the places and edits you suggest. It stays yours.
To run BucketList, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, reproduce, resize, display and distribute your content as part of the service. That includes showing it to other members as described in the Privacy Policy, and showing places you add on public place pages. The license ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies in backups that expire on their own schedule and reasonable copies other people's devices or search engines already have.
You promise that you own your content or have permission to share it, that it doesn't break the law or anyone's rights, and that anyone recognizable in your photos has agreed to it being shared.
5. Community rules
Be kind, and be honest. Please don't:
- post anything illegal, hateful, harassing, threatening, sexually explicit or graphically violent;
- share other people's private information, including home addresses, or add a private home as a place;
- upload photos you don't have the right to share, or photos of people who haven't agreed;
- impersonate someone, or use a name or picture meant to mislead;
- spam, advertise, or post links meant to scam or mislead;
- scrape the site, run bots, work around the daily limits, or try to break into accounts or the service;
- use BucketList to harm, stalk or track another person.
Some places are sensitive, such as memorials and sites of tragedy. Please treat them with respect.
6. Places and edits you submit
You can suggest new places and edits to existing ones. Submissions may be shown to everyone, including people without an account, and may be checked before or after they appear. We can edit, merge, hide or remove any place, edit or photo, for example if it's a duplicate, inaccurate, off-topic, private, or breaks these Terms. We may not always tell you why. Never submit a private address.
7. Reporting and moderation
If you see something that breaks these rules, use the Report button in the app, or write to us via the contact page. We may hide or remove content, limit features, suspend or close accounts, and pass information to the authorities where the law requires it. Repeat violations, or serious ones, can mean a permanent ban, and we may end the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe other people's copyright. If we remove something of yours and you think we got it wrong, tell us and we'll take another look.
8. Copyright and takedown requests
We respect copyright. If you believe something on BucketList infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated contact (via the contact form) that includes:
- your name, address, phone number or email, and your physical or electronic signature;
- a description of the copyrighted work you say is infringed;
- the web address (URL) of the material on BucketList, so we can find it;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief the use isn't authorized by the owner, its agent or the law;
- a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner.
We'll remove or disable access to material that appears to infringe, and tell the person who posted it. If you posted material that was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you can send a counter-notice with your name and contact details, the URL of the removed material, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe it was removed by mistake or misidentification, and your consent to the courts that have jurisdiction over your address. We may restore the material after the legal waiting period if the sender of the original notice doesn't tell us they've gone to court. Knowingly sending a false notice can make you liable for damages.
Photos and text from Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia are reused under their own open licenses; see Credits. If one of them should not be here, tell us and we'll take it down.
9. Third-party content and services
BucketList relies on third-party data, maps, hosting and AI services. They have their own terms, we don't control them, and they can change or go down. We're not responsible for third-party content, and links to other sites are at your own risk.
10. Our service, as is
BucketList is provided “as is” and “as available”, without promises that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that information on it is accurate. We may change, pause or end any part of it.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential losses, lost data or lost profits, or for what other people post. For anything else, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you've paid us (currently nothing) and 100 US dollars. You agree to cover claims caused by your content or your breach of these Terms, where the law allows it. Nothing here limits rights you have by law that can't be waived, such as consumer rights, or liability that can't be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
11. Ending things
You can stop using BucketList and delete your account at any time. We can suspend or close your account if you break these Terms, put others at risk, or if we have to by law. Sections that by their nature should survive (such as content licenses already granted, copyright, disclaimers and liability) do.
12. Changes
We may update these Terms. We'll change the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email. If you keep using BucketList after a change takes effect, you accept it. If you don't, you can delete your account.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws that apply where the person who runs BucketList lives, and disputes go to the courts there. If you're a consumer, you keep any mandatory rights from the country where you live, including the right to use your local courts. Before anything formal, please contact us first: most problems can be sorted out with a message.
14. Contact
Send questions about these Terms to the contact form. Other ways to reach us are on the contact page.
