Credits and licenses

BucketList stands on a lot of generous open work. Here is where everything comes from and the license it comes with.

Place information

  • Wikidata provides the catalog of places, their types, locations, short descriptions and links. Wikidata's data is released under CC0 1.0 (public domain dedication).
  • Wikipedia provides the short summaries on place pages. This text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license (CC BY-SA 4.0). Summaries on BucketList are excerpts and may be shortened or trimmed. Each one links back to its Wikipedia article, where the full text and its authors' history are. The summaries as shown here may be reused under the same license.

Photos

Place photos come from Wikimedia Commons and were taken by photographers around the world. Each photo has its own license, most often a Creative Commons license (CC BY or CC BY-SA) or the public domain, which sets out how it can be reused and who should be credited. Under each large photo we show the photographer, the license and a link to the photo's Commons file page, where you can find the original file. Small thumbnails show the same credit when you hover over them.

Photos that members upload to posts or places belong to those members and appear under the license they give us in the Terms. They are not under an open license.

Maps and geography

  • Maps use tiles from © OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Looking up which country and city a pin is in uses OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Maps are drawn with Leaflet.
  • Country names, codes and regions come from mledoze/countries (the world-countries package), available under the ODbL 1.0.
  • Country outlines come from Natural Earth (public domain), via the world-atlas package. The country map file we publish combines the outlines with the data above; the names, codes and regions in it remain available under the ODbL.
  • The Earth image on the globe is a NASA Blue Marble image (courtesy NASA Earth Observatory), as supplied with the three-globe library.

Fonts

Headings use Fredoka and text uses Nunito, both under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. We host the font files ourselves, so your browser doesn't contact a font service.
